The city dates back to 1891 when it was a camp used by railroad construction workers. The first settler of the town was a gentleman by the name of J. W. Hamilton who built a small wooden home in 1891 and Dacula began to grow around him.

The first postmaster, John W Freeman, suggested the name of the town be Dacula, a combination of letters from the towns of Atlanta and Decatur. The proper pronunciation for Dacula is da-CUE-la or duh-Q-luh.

Dacula, Georgia was incorporated in 1905 and has sustained continuous growth since.
